Mark Tully Massagli, President Emeritus

Mark Tully Massagli was born 1935 in Perth Amboy, NJ. His given name was Marco Tullio, after the great Roman Empire statesman-philosopher, Marcus Tullius Cicero, aka, Cicero. He moved with his family to North Hollywood in 1940. As a teenager he studied upright bass with Morty Corb, becoming skilled enough by 1954 at age 19 to join Los Angeles Local 47.

In 1957 he moved to Las Vegas and began work with the Hank Penny Band, with whom he stayed until 1963. This very same year he married Joan Sawyer, of the very popular Sawyer Sisters vocal act.

Mark joined Local 369 in 1964, and after a couple of years, he was elected to Local 369’s Board of Directors. After serving on Local 369’s Executive Board, he was elected Secretary/Treasurer from January 1, 1968 through December 31, 1978.

In 1974 he was elected as trustee to the prestigious AFM International Executive Board, where he served through 1983, in which year he was elected as AFM Vice-President, serving from 1984 through 1991.

In 1978, Mark was elected President of Local 369, beginning his term January 1, 1979, and served in that office through July 31, 1991.

In July of 1991, he achieved the pinnacle of union achievement by being elected President of the AFM of the United States & Canada, holding the office four years until 1995.

In addition he also served as President of the AFM Western Conference of Locals, was Co-Chairman on the AFM Employers Pension Fund from 1991-1995, and President of the Nevada State AFL-CIO, 1977-1984.

Mark “Tully” Massagli remains a revered member of Local 369, whose counsel is often sought, and whose name is reflected as President Emeritus, both by Local 369, and the AFM.

How providential, that a child named after the statesman Cicero, would serve his life as a statesman for the cause of unionism!

“If you have no confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life. With confidence, you have won even before you have started.” – Marcus Tullius Cicero
