He moved with his family to North Hollywood in 1940. As a teenager he studied upright bass with Morty Corb, becoming skilled enough by 1954 at age 19 to join Los Angeles Local 47.
In 1957 he moved to Las Vegas and began work with the Hank Penny Band, with whom he stayed until 1963. This very same year he married Joan Sawyer, of the very popular Sawyer Sisters vocal act.

How providential, that a child named after the statesman Cicero, would serve his life as a statesman for the cause of unionism!
“If you have no confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life. With confidence, you have won even before you have started.” – Marcus Tullius Cicero
